General The port of Odessa (46.30 N, 30.46 E) is considered the begining of the town. The port of Odessa is a highly mechanized transport enterprise and a hospitable harbour accomodating about 1500 cargo ships of 70 countries each year. The port can handle any ships, container carriers, bulkers, general-purpose vessels, Ro/Ro's and Ro/Flow's, tankers, lighter carriers, reefers, passenger liners.

The port of Odessa has set up a Traffic Control Centre which is a regional union of Traffic Control Posts of the ports of Odessa, Ilyichevsk, Yuzhny, Ochakov, Nikolayev and Kherson.

The port's fleet carries local cargoes and passengers, assists in mooring, ice escort and deliver food-stuffs and fuel on board ships.

The port has 40 berths of 7 km of common length.

Master, proceeding to the port of Odessa, shall latest 48 hours prior to arrival, advise Port Dispatcher and Agents: ETA, last port of call, charterer's name, ship's draught and length, the kind and quantity of inbound cargo by holds, or cargo to be loaded; heavy lifts over 3 tons, if any, number of passengers; required services. If transit time to the port of Odessa is less than 48 hours, the ETA and other data as above shall be advised latest one hour upon ship's departure from the port of sailing. The ETA shall be advised once again 12 hours prior to arrival and finally specified more accurately 4 hours prior to arrival.

Pilotage Navigation is year round in the port. In very severe winters, ice navigations is supported by icebreaker. Highly qualified Captain- Dispatchers will control the traffic in such a was as to provide for safe navigation of the vessels and minimum stay on roads. Pilotage and mooring of ships are carried out by expirienced and highly qualified pilots. Pilotage can be effected under winds up to Force 6 and waves up to 4 meters high. Pilots is taken on board when vessel is approaching the Vorontsovskiy lighthouse. Tankers and ships with a dangerous cargo take Pilot on board in the area of the 64th anchorage. Ships sailing from the port may leave Pilot in the area of the Vorontsovskiy lighthouse. For the better safety of navigation in poor visisbility conditions, offers of all ships with a VHF radio may rely on the services of a radar station. It operates round-the-clock and keeps Master adviced of his ship's positions.

Anchorage
Berthing
Ships arriving at the port of Odessa without prior advice may be anchored on roads, the same may happen if no berth is available. These anchorages are different for ships carrying generals and for tankers carrying dangerous cargoes or ships having a deep draught. The port is protected from heavy seas by several moles (jetties) and break-waters. The port of Odessa has two entrances: the EASTERN and WESTERN. The Oil Harbour is accessible via a dep channel, 1.6 mile long and 125 m wide.

Restrictions The port may be called at by vessels with draught unexceeding 12 m. Most of the berths can accomodate ships draughting 8 m to 11 m.

Medical Medical aid is rendered by medical personnel of the port Polyclinic which operated round-the-clock. Special medical aid is obtainable at the Basin Clinic Hospital.

Specialized cargo handling facilities The port's cargo turnover is 28 mln tons. Dry-cargo ships are handled by the port at 6 specialized integrated facilities with cargo turnover of 10 mln tons.

Facilities are specialized in the handling of chemical, steel cargoes, equipment and containerized cargo, cereals in bulk, paper, timber, refrigirated food cargoes, etc. Its cargo turnover is 18 mln tons.

Cranes and others Efficient loading /discharging is carried out by:
  • portal cranes of 5 t to 40 t
  • truck and caterpillar cranes of up to 20 t
  • floating cranes of 15 t to 100 t
  • pneumatic reloaders with a capacity of 300-500 t/h
  • integrated mechanized technological lines
  • auto and electric fork-lift trucks, special machines for cargo handling in ship's holds, tractors, primers and trailers

Fresh water Fresh water can be supplied from the barge.
Fuel Bunkers can be supplied from the port's tankers available by prior arrangement through vessel's Agent.
Repairs Hull and machine repairs can be effected.
Time GMT plus 2 hours
Radio The radio Station of Black Sea Shipping Company operates round-the-clock both for telegraph and radio telephone communication purposes. Odessa Port control VHF 14. The Post Office is located in the entrance hall of the Marine Passenger Terminal.
Tugs Tugs shall be ordered by the Master as directed the pilot.
